Low-voltage power system

Most lamps light for a few seconds when you power the car on. That check is not a fault by itself. This page does not replace the owner’s manual for your model year and market. Icons are schematic illustrations used on this site. They are not offered as the vehicle maker’s artwork, and they have not been checked against it. They may not match the lamp on your cluster. Urgency levels are this site’s classification, not the maker’s. If they differ from the manual, follow the manual.
What it means
This is the 12-volt side of the car, not the large traction-battery gauge. It reports the converter that feeds the low-voltage system and the small auxiliary battery. While driving, a steady lamp means that supply is not healthy. During charging, the same lamp can mean the charge equipment or the on-board charger has a fault.
What to do
Turn off the air conditioning and the fans to reduce the load, stop in a safe place, and arrange a check. If you keep driving, steering assist, lights, and the ability to shut down cleanly can fade as the auxiliary battery drops. Plugging in the high-voltage charge port does not, by itself, repair a failed low-voltage supply.

Common questions
- Is this the high-voltage battery running out?
- No. State of charge for the traction battery is the percent or range display. This lamp is the small auxiliary system that runs the computers, lights, and control units.
- Why turn off the air conditioning?
- The climate system is a large extra load on a supply that is already failing. Switching it off, and the fans, gives you more chance to pull over before the low-voltage battery is flat.
